Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in Maiden Speech
On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his term.
A Historic Figure
The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
