Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
