Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
