Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such treatments should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
