The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
